| Velika Britanija | | Biggest pay campaign | | 11/04/03 | | NUJ | | | The National Union of Journalists has launched its biggest campaign to tackle low pay in local newspapers for more than a decade.
Journalists at dozens of Newsquest-owned titles across the UK are joining a national campaign for improved pay at the company’s newspapers.
Under the slogan "FAIR PAY NOW" hundreds of journalists have signed up to the NUJ’s campaign and will set the ball rolling by distributing hard-hitting leaflets at workplaces and in towns across the country.
Pay claims have been submitted at papers in Brighton, Oxford, London, York, Bolton, Bradford, Andover, Bournemouth, Blackburn, Darlington, Salisbury, Swindon and other towns and cities as part of the campaign for a 6 per cent rise for each of the next two years.
Earlier this year journalists at two Newsquest centres, in Bradford and Bolton, took protracted strike action over the abysmal rates of pay.
General Secretary Jeremy Dear said: “Journalists in Newsquest are undervalued and underpaid. Despite winning many awards and making millions of pounds in profit virtually every single journalist in Newsquest earns below the national average wage for a non-manual worker – some earn more than £10,000 less.
“The string of awards show their work is not below average, so why is their pay?
“Why do Newsquest believe their journalists are worth so little? We have found adverts in Newsquest’s own papers for street cleaners, park rangers, health workers, probation officers, teachers, fast food chain employees, lecturers, train operators, and dozens of other professions earning many thousands of pounds more than many of the company’s own journalists.
“The Association of Graduate Recruiters says that after 12 months in employment the average graduate pay is around £22,000. There is not a single equivalent Newsquest journalist who is anywhere near that – we even have people with ten years experience earning up to £6,000 less.
“To be paying some qualified seniors as little as £14,000 is simply unacceptable for a company which made millions of pounds profit last year. These are skilled professional people, producing successful newspapers and doing a professional job – they deserve to be paid like professionals.
“The Low Pay Unit’s low pay threshold is £13,500 yet Newsquest pays its graduate trainees less than that”.
“Our claim is not unreasonable – all we want is a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work and for peoples’ skills to be properly rewarded. The papers our members produce are very profitable. Whilst executive pay rose 43 per cent and shareholders benefit from the company’s success too many of our members are offered below-inflation pay deals and poverty pay.
“Now journalists are determined to share in the success they help achieve. The aim of our campaign is to highlight the appalling levels of pay and to work towards achieving professional levels of pay for professional people”.
Newsquest is one of the UK’s largest newspaper publishers. The group has 17 daily titles and more than 300 title in all, with a weekly circulation of over 10 million copies. It is wholly owned is owned by Gannett, a major US corporation which publishes 80 daily papers and last year made profits of $1.16 billion (£753 million).
Newsquest publishes newspapers in the following areas: Bolton, Bradford, Bury, Blackburn, Blackpool, Oxford, Swindon, Taunton, Andover, Salisbury, Chorley, Kendal, Preston, South London, Kent, Stourbridge, Darlington, Bournemouth, Dorset, Southampton, Andover, Brighton, York, South Wales.
A copy of the full pay claim and further information on pay rates, profit figures, executive pay rates and comparisons with other professions are available. Contact Lisa Roberts on 020 7843 3728
During the campaign the union will be asking members and supporters to get involved in the campaign. There are lots of ways to help. To get involved send your details to endlowpay@nuj.org.uk
EXPANSION of the Newsquest group has been checked by the government decision on a new takeover of 23 weekly titles in the Greater London area. See story linked top right.
